Assn stage stir to demand ban on sand mining

Last Updated 06 April 2010, 18:23 IST

Protesters told officials that the environment in Mudigere taluk is being spoiled due to the sand mining. The Mines and Geology Department authorities have failed completely in initiating action against illegal sand miners, they said.

They stated in a memorandum submitted to Deputy Commissioner Channappa Gowda that the contractors use JCB machines for sand mining on river bed. This will cause several environmental problems including damage to bridges and river shores. Meanwhile, roads were all damaged due to the overloaded trucks of sand miners.
When the protesters were trying to lock the Mines and Geology Department Office, police stopped them. Raitha Sangha leaders Gurushanthappa, Manjunath, Duggappagowda, Jagadish, Dalit Organisation leaders K T Radhakrishna, Eshwar, Kumar, CPI leaders Amjad, Raghu and Congress leader Shivanandaswamy were present.
