The protest being staged by Kasturi Karnataka Janapara Vedike, demanding release of water to Visvesvaraya canal from the KRS dam, entered the 21st day on Thursday.

The Maddur bandh, called by the organisation in this regard, evoked good response, with the traders voluntarily downing the shutters of their establishments on the day. All cinema theatres and hotels remained closed. Educational institutions had announced a holiday in the taluk.

Six members of the organisation, led by district president K Rameshgowda, began a fast unto death protest on the lakebed. Thousands of farmers extended their support, by arriving on the lakebed with their motorbikes, tractors and bullock carts. Women from Deshahalli, Valegarehalli, Chamanahalli and other villages joined the protest for water.

Members of several organisations, including KRRS, Bar Association, Kannada Sene, Jaya Karnataka, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, Muslim Vedike, and Tamil Vedike participated in the protest.

Former MP Tejaswini Gowda, who spoke on the occasion, condemned the state government for not taking the issue seriously even though the protest is being held since 20 days. District in-charge and Water Resources ministers should hold talks with the officials concerned and take steps to release water immediately, she demanded.
