National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru Vice Chancellor R Venkata Rao has said that the aim of education is to remove imperfections among human beings and thus ethics and values play a prominent role in education.

Rao delivered a lecture on ‘Importance of values and ethics in higher education’ as organised by the University of Mysore (UoM) as part of its 102nd Foundation Day at Crawford Hall here on Thursday. The VC said that the main objective of education is to remove imperfections. “A man with perfection is god and god with imperfection is man,” he said.

“Ethics and values are important in education and for human beings. Every parent wants their child to become wiser after finishing school and this is possible only with value-added education. Education is not only information but helps in completing the lives of human beings,” he said.

Stressing on competitions, the VC said that each competition should bring out the best in human beings but these days, competitions are only bringing out the best products. “Permanent values are more important than temporary values. Mother Teresa had once said that showing concern towards others is part of ethics. 3Ms have been controlling human beings. In the initial stages of humankind, ‘muscle’ power used to control man, later ‘money’ power and in the 21st century, it is ‘mind’ power,” he said.

Rao said that qualified people should stick to integrity, ethics and values to become thorough professionals.

“We will be a developed nation only if people are developed. We should instill values and integrity among youths. Our youths are extremely talented and hence, should be nurtured in the right fashion,” he said.
