The wonder herb to the rescue

Our country has a long history of traditional health practices. One of the most popular features of traditional health practices is the use of herbs, and one such wonder herb is tulsi or holy basil, which is not only an important symbol in Hinduism, but is also used in traditional medicines.

Tulsi’s medicinal properties help reduce stress, enhance stamina and endurance, boost the immune system, slow ageing and provide a rich supply of antioxidants. Here are some uses of tulsi as an effective herbal home remedy:

During the monsoons, when malaria and dengue abound, tender tulsi leaves, boiled with tea can boost immunity. In case of acute fever, a decoction of leaves boiled with powdered cardamom in half a litre of water and mixed with sugar and milk brings down the fever.

Tulsi is an important constituent of many Ayurvedic cough syrups and expectorants. It helps to mobilise mucus in bronchitis and asthma. A concoction of the leaves, with honey and ginger, is an effective remedy for bronchitis, asthma, influenza, cough and cold.

The herb also has a strengthening effect on the kidney. In case of renal stones, the juice of basil leaves and honey, if taken regularly for six months, will expel them via the urinary tract.

Tulsi leaves are regarded as an ‘adaptogen’ or anti-stress agent. Recent studies have shown that the leaves provide significant protection against stress. It is known to purify blood.

It is also a natural curative for insect bites and can be used in case of skin ailments. Fresh tulsi juice can be applied to the affected parts for relief. It can be used to treat ringworm and other skin diseases..

Raw, pounded or infused in different blends, tulsi is one herb that has the power to cure several ailments and keep the body healthy.
