Encroachments upon lands relinquished to MCC cleared

In a surprise raid, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) cleared the temporary constructions and barricades on the corporation land, which have been procured through relinquishment deed.

On Friday morning, an unauthorised shed near Rao and Rao Cirlce was bulldozed in the presence of Mayor Kavitha Sanil, Commissioner B A Muhammed Nazir and other MCC staff.

The Mayor said that while availing permission from MUDA for new building, the land owners will sign a relinquishment deed saying that they will handover a part of the land to MCC, towards the road after the completion of the building. But, the construction work does not get completed even after 10 years. In several such cases, the traffic density increases and the unauthorised, old or temporary constructions on the building site will cause a hindrance to people by encroaching a large part of the road.

During the last MCC Council meeting, a decision was taken to serve notices to the building owners asking them to handover the land to the Palike by clearing the temporary constructions. As the building owners did not take any action to clear the construction on the relinquishment land, the MCC itself cleared such constructions, Kavitha said.

During the raid, a building owner picked up an argument with the Mayor and said why she is not clearing the unauthorised shops in the basement parking area on another building. The Mayor replied that action will be taken against such illegal shops.

Metal barricades, hoardings and part of a compound wall at another construction site near Rao and Rao circle were also demolished. The operation was conducted at KSRTC road and Lower Bendoor as well.
