Farmers intensify farming activities in Kushalnagar

Buoyed over the bountiful rains in the last few days in the district, farmers have intensified their farm activities in Harangi catchment areas.

The rains have brought smile on the face of the farmers, who are now engaged in preparation of paddy seedlings and tilling the land at Hebbale, Kanive, Huluse, Thorenooru, Shirangala, Hudugooru and Koodige villages.

A few farmers, as an alternative to paddy cultivation, are engaged in cultivating ginger, maize and tobacco as well. The farmers in Siddalingapura, Arasinakuppe, Araluvara, Banavara cultivate sweet potato, Cassava (mara genasu) and Elephant Foot Yam while the farmers in Marooru, Halagote, Chikkaluvaa, Thorenooru are cultivating tobacco.

Water from left canal of Harangi irrigates 5,000 acre farm land from Hudagoory to Shirangala. The water from the canal also irrigates Arakagooru in Hassan district. While the water from right canal irrigates 1.5 lakh acre farm land in Piriyapattana, KR Nagara and Hunasoor in Mysuru, said an official from the Agriculture department.

Poonaccha, agriculture officer, Raitha Samparka Kendra, Kushalnagar, said that the target was to cultivate paddy on 1,600 hectare land in Kushalnagar hobli.
