RWA protests setting up Indira Canteen in park

The protest by the residents of Tata Nagar in Bengaluru North, opposing the construction of Indira Canteen at a park, continued on Saturday too. But the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is in no mood to relent.

The BBMP is constructing the canteen on the site, originally allotted for the development of a park. The High Court of Karnataka has ordered on Thursday, directing the Palike not to build any canteens on parks or playgrounds. But the local body is going ahead with its plan to set up canteen citing that the land in question is an open space, the aggrieved residents complained.

“The canteen is being built on a plot which is allotted for the development of a park. The canteen is coming up in the middle of Hiranandani Apartment and Aadhaar enrollment office. It is a political gimmick. The canteen is meant for the poor and how will they find poor people here,” asked Renuka Gopinath, a member of JRD Tata Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association.

On the day one of the protest on Friday, about 25 residents had gathered near the construction site and stalled the work for some time. The members of JRD Tata Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association even met the area councillor, Chethan Kumar, on Saturday evening. “We have been asked to submit the papers which state that the park is notified,” said Gopinath.

Meanwhile, Kumar said that the plot was not notified and hence it cannot be considered as a park.

“Tata Nagar has about 500 houses and only a few people are obstructing the work. I am sure BJP is behind this and they are against the name ‘Indira’,” said Kumar. The construction work of the canteen has been resolved.
