HC seeks details on selection of ward panel members

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Tuesday submitted the list of its ward committee members to the high court.

The civic body, however, did not file an affidavit mentioning the details of the procedure adopted by it while selecting the ward committee members.

A division bench, comprising Justice Jayant Patel and Justice S Sujatha, directed BBMP to file its affidavit in the next hearing on August 28. The bench directed BBMP to display a board with details, including the names and addresses of members of the ward committees.

In another report, BBMP stated that it is verifying 32,000 pourakarmikas. To this report, the bench directed it to list the names of pourakarmikas who are on the payroll of the corporation and those deployed for duty in respective wards. The court also sought the details of contract pourakarmikas besides the names and the telephone numbers of garbage contractors.  The bench set a two-week deadline to submit this report.

The court also told the civic body to display the details of all supervisors and their contact numbers in respective wards. The counsel, representing the petitioner, said that the report with regard to the list of pourakarmikas has been manipulated by the contractors and sought time to go through both the reports. The bench also gave a warning to various petitioners who have been making their submission directly to the court. The judge asked them to speak through the counsel representing them.
