Traffic came to a grinding halt on major roads, mainly in Bengaluru South on Sunday as a large number of people thronged the Lalbagh Botanical Garden on the penultimate day of the Independence Day flower show.

Horticulture Department sources said that 87,200 adults and 9,200 children visited the Lalbagh on Sunday.

The department made a collection of Rs 47.84 lakh in one day through sale of tickets.

Vehicular movement slowed towards noon as people came to Lalbagh in private vehicles. Parking for visitors’ vehicles was provided outside the botanical garden.

Traffic snarls
But as the crowds swelled, the surrounding roads were packed with vehicles, resulting in traffic jams, said the police.

As a ripple effect, the traffic movement slowed down in Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Shantinagar, Double Road, J C Road and even near the City Railway Station in the afternoon and this continued till almost 5 pm.

It was a bumper-to-bumper ride on roads in Sudhamnagar, VV Puram, Kalasipalyam, parts of Basavanagudi, Chamarajpet, Lakkasandra, Gavipuram and Shankarpuram.

The traffic police deployed additional forces to ensure smooth movement of vehicles on Siddaiah Road, K H Road, Dr M H Marigowda Road, Road and Bull Temple Road and near Minerva Circle and South End Circle. The Horticulture department had deployed its guards to assist the traffic police near the Lalbagh.
