Manipal University Philatelic and Numismatics Club, in association with Dakshina Kannada Philatelic and Numismatic Association, will organise Tulunadpex-2017, a regional-level philatelic and numismatic exhibition and competition at Dr TMA Pai Hall here on August 19 and 20.

Dr Suma Nair, president of Philatelic and Numismatics Club, Manipal University, said, “The aim of the exhibition is to promote philately and numismatics and create awareness about educational and cultural values of stamps and coins among public, especially the youth and the school children,” she said. The club was started on December 6, 2015, with the idea of promoting the hobby in the region. “Last year was the first exhibition and it was very successful. This year there are far more entries,” she added.

Vishwesh K, organising secretary, said, “Six special covers and a permanent pictorial cancellation will be released on the occasion. Also, on August 20, a drawing completion—‘Design your stamp’ for school and PU college students is organised. The themes for the drawing competition will be as follows: Classes 1- 4: My favourite animal/bird; Classes 5-7: Swachh Bharat; Classes 8-12: India of my dreams.”
“The coins on display also are of the rare kind: Indian princely states, Indian pre and post-Independence and foreign coins. There will be 219 frames of stamps and 60 tables of coins collections on display, making it a colourful exhibition and is a biggest ever conducted in this region,” Vishwesh said.

In this exhibition, there will be a display of stamps and coins collection by senior philatelist and numismatist Daniel Monteiro, M K Krishnayya, Vittal Das Shanbaugh, Dr Vinod H Bhat, M R Pavanje, Sridhar, Prabhakar Kamath and Jayaprakash Rao and others who have won awards in state, national and international levels on various topics like light house, postal stationery, perfins, letters, India pre and post-Independence stamps, Indian princely states, Portuguese and French India stamps, Falkland Island, Kuwait, mammals, birds, global warming. There will be 219 frames of stamps and 60 tables of coins on display, he added.
He said the coastal part of Karnataka has contributed to the hobbies of philately and numismatics. The philately showed its presence in 1975 with the formation of Mangalore Philatelic Club, now known as Dakshina Kannada Philatelic and Numismatic Association. This association used to conduct philatelic exhibition every two years and used to promote philately in the region.

The last exhibition was conducted in 2006 in Udupi by this association and 2009 by the Postal department, Mangalore division, after which there has been a decline in this hobby among the younger generation of this region, he said.
