With only 6 kitchens, BBMP struggles to fill plates at 101 canteens

Last Updated 16 August 2017, 20:06 IST

Although 101 canteens was inaugurated in the city, only 87 canteens could serve the food on time on Wednesday evening.

With just six kitchens operational, BBMP struggled to deliver the food on schedule.

It was only in the evening that the remaining 100 canteens were inaugurated, after the morning function at Kanakanapalya. But due to rain and lack of sufficient kitchens, the caterers found it difficult to deliver the food on time.

“As many as 87 canteens could serve people on time. But the food was delayed in the remaining 14 canteens due to the downpour, traffic and long distance from the kitchens,” said Manoj Rajan, special commissioner, Indira Canteen.

“This is the first day and things will be in place after a few days,” said a senior BBMP official.

Although the canteens were supposed to be operational from 7.30 pm, food was not delivered till 8.30 pm in some places.

The canteen at Basavanagudi saw more than 50 people waiting, but it was only after 8.30 pm that food was distributed.

The canteen at Ejipura did not operate till 9 pm. The gate was not opened till the food arrived. A similar situation prevailed in Vasanth Nagar, where more than 100 people were waiting for the food. It was served only after 9.45 pm.

Only six kitchens are functioning, at Old Airport Road, Madanayakanahalli, Gunjur, Sahakarnagar, Jayanagar and Rajajinagar, which supply the food to the 101 canteens operational at present.
