The heavy downpour on Tuesday has made the city prone to an epidemic outbreak.

According to doctors, the overflow of the drains would leave rodents and dirt near the premises of the houses. Diseases like typhoid, cholera, fever among others are common during the time.

Experts in the city have asked people to take precautionary measures to avoid infections and communicable diseases that may occur during the time of water logging.

“Although mosquito larva gets washed away, there are chances that drinking water may get mixed with contaminated water, especially if the pipes have leaked. People should drink water after boiling and cooling it,” said Dr Lokesh M N, Chief Health Officer, BBMP.

Rashes on skin may also occur due to contact with contaminated water, doctors cautioned asking people to have a bath if they come in contact with stench or contaminated water.

They also advised people to eat hot food and properly preserved food to avoid infection. They said that people should keep their houses and its premises clean and keep a check on flies that may cause bacterial infections.

Dr Prakash Kumar, Deputy Director of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), said that diseases like diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, vomiting are common during water logging and flooding.

He said, “people tend to buy canned water. It should be kept in mind that it is properly sealed. There are cases where bore well water is used instead of drinking water in these cans.”

He said that the water in affected areas should be immediately chlorinated and checked for any contamination. BBMP should check for leakages of pipes immediately.

Officials from BBMP said that the city may report sporadic cases in the coming days as the water logging was heavy.
