Modi will be nowhere if opposition fights together: Rahul

Making a fresh bid to unite the opposition, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said if they stayed together the BJP will not be seen anywhere.

Addressing an opposition conclave organised by rebel JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav, Rahul launched a stinging attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing him a lying where ever he went.

“Where ever he goes Modi ji speaks a lie. If we fight together he will not be seen anywhere,” Rahul said at the 'Saanjhi Virasat Bachao' (Save Composite Heritage) programme attended by opposition leader including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury among others.

The BJP dismissed the gathering of opposition leaders as an “alliance of scared people”.

“They are scared of Modiji. This is an alliance of those who are worried over charges of corruption and are facing action. This is the real centre of this alliance,” senior BJP leader and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said here.

Rahul hit out at the government for not being able to keep its promises and said the Prime Minister wanted to create a 'Swachch Bharat' (clean India) whereas the people were demanding a 'sach Bharat' (truthful India).

Hitting out at the Modi government and the RSS, Rahul accused them of trying to change the Constitution.

“After Independence, (Jawaharlal) Nehruji, (Sardar Vallabhbhai) Patelji, (B.R.) Ambedkarji all talked about ‘one man, one vote’ system. They know well that till the time there is ‘one man, one vote’ system in the country, till that time the country doesn’t belong to them. RSS’s main aim is to destroy and finish the Constitution. They ultimately want to take away the ‘one man, one vote’ right,” he said.

Rahul also accused the RSS of subverting institutions as it was aware that it cannot win elections merely on the basis of its ideology.

Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said the faction led by Sharad Yadav was the “real” JD(U) while the group led by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was “completely drowned in the BJP”.

BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad reminded Yadav that he had started his political career during the JP movement by opposing the Congress. “Now he is feeling blithe by sitting with Rahul Gandhi,” the BJP leader quipped.
