Amp up elegance on a budget

Elegant homes achieve a finer design aesthetic by combining classic traditional elements in conjunction with modern pieces. It is about adding the finishing touches and small details that can often be overlooked on their own, but when added together, can really round off a room. At times, it can appear challenging to create such a space, but with a few simple tricks, you can give yourself the room you’ve always dreamed of.

Wall moulding

When it comes to decorating your home to look high-end and custom-made, details are the key. Moulding and trims are a common but great technique to transform a basic room to a tasteful and comfortable space. Moulding has a way of making a room look complete by bringing the walls and ceiling together and giving them an elegant appearance. For a sophisticated look, choose a thin to medium width for the trim. You can add minimalistic chair rails, baseboards, and casings for a more formal feel.

Pastel & neutral hues

The paint colour is perhaps one of the most difficult decisions to make while decorating a room. However, if elegance is what you’re after, use soft and understated hues. Even if the furniture is classic or traditional, the overall feel of the room can be made contemporary by using a pale colour palette. This can make the room feel light, airy, and modern.

Cosy setting

Whenever possible, make sure that your seating is cushioned and upholstered. Create an intimate seating arrangement, where the sofas have been placed facing each other, for a snug feel. Opt for richer high-quality upholstery fabrics to cement the luxurious feel.

Throw pillows

It’s impossible to discuss plush seating without talking about throw pillows. Pillows serve two purposes. One, they really spruce up the elegance factor, and two, they offer you and your guests some extra comfort on the sofa and create a cosy, layered feel to your bedrooms. The tip to choose the right pillows for a luxurious look is to pick rich fabrics and coordinated colours.

Window treatments

One of the most budget-friendly ways to add warmth and grace to your home is to add window dressing. Apart from that, they also aid the much-needed privacy of your space. While selecting window treatments, you want to ensure that the material is not flimsy. Go for natural materials like silk, cotton, and linen for a sophisticated look. If draperies are not your thing, try woven bamboo shades or wooden blinds.

Accessories

Most homes lack the necessary accessories to bring in that luxurious touch. The truth is, you don’t always need very expensive pieces to make a space elegant. For example, gold is associated with affluence and can instantly create an elegant feeling as long as it is not overdone.

It is recommended to keep the pieces simple, using one or two items as statement pieces for the room and pair them with solid hues in order to create a relaxed look. Accessorise with metallic picture frames, mirrors, or a minimalistic gold legged side table.

Antique charm

There is something beautiful about incorporating antique elements into your decor that adds a feeling of grandeur to a space. By choosing just one or two pieces you can add a layer of visual interest to the space without clashing with the look of your room.

Mirrors are a great option since they will add depth to any space. You could also anchor the room with a vintage armchair or vanity. Those who are new to collecting antiques can start with a decorative vase, study lamps or wall plates
