Decor mistakes you should avoid

Last Updated 17 August 2017, 17:40 IST

Sometimes, to make a difference to your living space, all you need is a few small tweaks. But, be careful, there is a thin line between good and bad and if you aren’t aware of what you are doing, it could spell doom. Even professional designers sometimes lose focus and make blunders, but that’s what tips are for. Here they go:

Painting walls before choosing furniture

This is one of the most common mistakes that people commit. We often get carried away and without taking all the details into consideration, we choose a certain colour palette for our walls. Always avoid painting the walls first and then choosing the furniture. There are tonnes of colour tones to choose from when it comes to paint; however the same is not the case with furniture and accessories. So, bear in mind this limitation and always pick out your furniture first and then opt for a suitable paint to match the furniture.

Not considering size

Often times, people end up buying decor pieces and furniture that are out of proportion which makes the space you are decorating pretty unappealing. You do not want the room to look too tiny or too empty. A sofa might look good in the showroom but not necessarily in your living room. So do keep that in mind before choosing furniture.

Matching everything

It’s extremely easy to get carried away and wanting to match everything in the house. However, this is not the best idea. An interior space that is matching everything around it only says that your imagination is pretty bad. Instead, try to look for diversity, add some elements that will complement things in your space and not just match it.

Letting others decide for you

We aren’t saying that you shouldn’t take other people’s advice into consideration; however don’t let someone else make the decision for you. Remember that it is your space and you are the one who has to live there and make it feel like home for you. So, find your style and do what makes you happy, even if it defies all traditions.

Pushing furniture against wall

We are sure that most of us are guilty of this act. We tend to put all our furniture against the wall, which is not always the best move. By doing so, you tend to make the space look like a hallway and don’t really entice conversation or interaction between people. Avoid this, especially in your living room.

Cluttering

Stacking your room with too many things isn’t the best way to decorate your room. Remember that overcrowding in an effort to make it more comfortable results in the complete opposite. A space that looks and feels cluttered is less appealing and less inviting, and a much simpler one where only the basic are included is far more inviting. Don’t forget the rule of thumb – less is more!
