IITs mulls paperless JEE-Advance using ICT

Last Updated 18 August 2017, 21:05 IST

The government wants the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to conduct a paperless entrance test using the information communication technology (ICT) and phase out the traditional system of holding admission tests in pen and paper mode.

“The holding of computer-based entrance test for admissions to the IITs will have many advantages. It will not only help prevent the risk of paper leaks but also bring more transparency,” official sources in the Human Resource Development Ministry said.

The suggestion to hold a computer-based Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), Advance only will be discussed at the upcoming meeting of the Joint Admission Board (JAB) of the IITs.

The meeting of the JAB is likely to be held at IIT-Madras later this month.

“The suggestion to phase out pen and paper mode of examination system is limited to its application on the JEE-Advance only,” the official said.

The option for taking entrance test in pen and paper mode will remain available to candidates appearing for JEE-Main.

“Holding JEE-Main in complete computer-based mode is not feasible in view of the number of candidates appearing for the test every year and several complexities, like normalisation of scores involved in the declaration of its results,” the official said.
