Irked over the influx of visitors at her home, the family members of an alleged ''victim'' of 'braid cutting' hanged her ''chopped braid'' on a pole outside their house for public viewing in Uttar Pradesh's Gonda district, about 200 kilometres from here.

According to the reports, the braid of a 14-year old girl, a resident of Sakraura locality in Karnailganj town in the district, was allegedly ''chopped'' on Wednesday night, while she was asleep.

Reports said that people not only from the neighbourhood but also from the nearby areas started flocking her house to see the 'victim' and her ''chopped braid''.

''We were fed up with the visitors....they would keep coming even late in the nights...our pleas to the people not to visit our house did not have any effect,'' said Shyam Lal, the father of the girl.

The family members then, in a bid to prevent the curious people from flooding their house, hanged the ''chopped braid'' on a pole close to their home so that the people could see it.

''Now no one needs to come to our house...they can see the chopped braid hanging from the pole,'' Shyam Lal said.

Notwithstanding the efforts of the government and the social organisations, 'braid cutting' rumours still continued in UP. Police sources said that alleged incidents of 'braid cutting' continued in the state. So far around two hundred incidents of alleged braid cutting had been reported from different parts of the state in the past few days.

At least two women were allegedly assaulted and another was lynched to death by a mob in different parts of UP. The authorities have directed the district officials to crack down on rumour mongers. Police was keeping a close watch on the social networking sites also to find out if they were being used to spread rumours.
