Council bypoll: Ibrahim files nomination

Last Updated 21 August 2017, 20:41 IST

Former union minister C M Ibrahim on Monday filed his nomination papers as the Congress candidate for the Legislative Council byelection scheduled on August 31. He is likely to be declared elected unopposed.

Monday was the last day to file nominations. Scrutiny of nominations will be done on Tuesday, and Wednesday is the last day for withdrawal of nominations. The bypoll is necessitated due to the death of BJP leader Vimala Gowda recently.

Opposition parties, the BJP and the JD(S), have not fielded their candidates as they do not have the numerical strength to win the seat. The ruling Congress has the majority in the Legislative Assembly and hence, it can win the bypoll easily. Members of the Assembly are the voters in the byelections.

Asked to comment on speculation that he may not be given a ministerial berth, Ibrahim cheekily said: “I’ve been made the bridegroom now and it’s up to me to do the rest.”
Ibrahim, if elected, will have a tenure of only 10 months.
