Mayor orders official's suspension

Last Updated 21 August 2017, 21:44 IST

Mayor G Padmavathi directed Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad to suspend a senior health officer after she found that customers were turned away though there was sufficient food in the canteen.

Nagesh was deployed at an Indira Canteen in Subramanyanagar on Monday morning. He reportedly closed the canteen during breakfast time since there was not enough drinking water.

During a surprise visit to the canteen, Padmavathi saw the canteen closed at around 8.10 am. A placard stating “The canteen is closed due to the shortage of water” was put up at the entrance. Much to her surprise, she saw people who had bought food tokens waiting in line for food. Seeing this, she ordered the door to be opened, and found that there was sufficient food inside. She also found that the health officer and the canteen staff were seen eating the food behind closed doors.

She immediately directed Prasad to bring this issue to the notice of Bengaluru Development Minister K J George over phone.

Nagesh, however, said that he was directed to close the canteen since there was shortage of drinking water.

When Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) officials were contacted, they said they had given the water connection three days ago.

Customers had got into an argument with canteen staff three days ago since there was not enough food and water in the canteen.
