Nilekani steps in to broker peace at Infy

Infosys co-founder and former MD & CEO Nandan Nilekani has stepped in to make truce between the company's board and the founders.

According to reliable sources, Nilekani has already held a meeting with company's board in order to sort out the differences. However, when approached, the company declined to comment on the development. Despite repeated calls from DH, Nilekani did not respond.

Nilekani's name has been making the rounds for making a comeback at the helm of the IT major. He stepped down from the post of MD and CEO in April 2007 to take up the role of Chairman of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), which introduced Aadhaar in the country.

Other co-founders of the company, which DH contacted, declined to comment on the issue.

An analyst, who is tracking the latest developments in the company, said Infosys should ideally look within the organisation to appoint a successor to Vishal Sikka as CEO and MD. Sikka announced his resignation to the post on August 18. The company has named its long-time empolyee U B Pravin Rao as the interim CEO and MD.

“The company should look at its ex-employees. We have to realise that most of the revenue for Infosys comes from the US. Hence, they need a person who is close to clients there. Dadlani, former head of US operations is a good option for that matter,” K Lakshmikanth, Managing Director of Head Hunters India, a boutique executive search firm, told DH.

Contrary to the perception, he also suggested that though the company will keep attracting talent for top jobs from outside, but their performance will be impacted.

He also discounted Pravin Rao as its full time CEO, saying that he is based in Bengaluru and doesn’t have much of client contacts in the US. Since the exit of Sikka, there have been reports of Rao being made full-time CEO and MD owing to his long association with the company.

Ravi Venkatesan, company’s co-chairman had last week pointed out that it is difficult to get an external candidate to run Infosys at this stage.
