Festival effect: Flower, veggie prices to go up

Last Updated 22 August 2017, 20:49 IST

As the festive season begins, prices of vegetables and flowers are set to go up. However, there may not be much variation in the prices of fruits.

G M Diwakar, President, K R Market Traders’ Welfare Association, said the price of flowers would double or go up manifold. Increase in price is not just because of the festival, but also due to rain and drop in production.

Officials in the Horticultural Producers’ Cooperative Marketing and Processing Society Limited (Hopcoms) said that prices would shoot up from Wednesday. “It will increase only from Wednesday and the rates will be decided by the society in consultation with farmers. Thus, it is too early to comment,” said a senior Hopcoms official.

A kilo of jasmine on Tuesday was priced at Rs 400 and kanakambara at Rs 800.

“Increase in price is not new. It is a regular feature. But this time supply in the market is less, which could further escalate the price and affect sales,” Diwakar said. R V Gopi, president, Vegetables and Fruits Wholesale Merchants’ Association in Kalasipalya market said that vegetable prices did not increase till Tuesday. But from Wednesday, there will be a hike because of the festival. The price of tomatoes had touched Rs 100 a kg earlier this month.

On Tuesday, it had come down to Rs 25 a kg. Same is the case with beans which was priced between Rs 40 and Rs 50 a kg. Prices of all vegetables including leafy vegetables will increase by at least 20%.
