EC says Jagan's 'shoot Chandrababu Naidu' rant is violation of conduct

The Election Commission, in its response to a petition submitted by Telugu Desam Party, has asked State Election Commission to issue a stern warning to YSR Congress chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy for his comments on chief minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu during election campaign for Nandyal by-poll, saying that is a gross violation of the code of conduct.

It was on 3 August; Jaganmohan Reddy has called upon voters to shoot the Chief Minister right in the middle of the road for not fulfilling poll time promises.“There is nothing wrong if you shoot Chandrababu Naidu on the road for the way he is cheating you,” Jagan said.  He even called Naidu as a “Rakshasha,” and asked voters to end the demonic rule by voting for YSRCP beginning an end to TDP rule. Immediately the TDP leaders rushed to the state election officials and submitted a written complaint against the opposition leader.

However, Jaganmohan Reddy continued his tirade against Naidu and said that there is nothing wrong to hang Naidu for making tall promises but failing to deliver those assurances. The State Election Commission has submitted video clippings and reports from Kurnool district collector to the CEC last week.

“The EC has asked the State Election Commission to give a serious warning to Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy that such comments will not be tolerated. The warning is being issued to him today. Police have already filed a FIR against him which they will pursue,” Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwar Lal, said here on Wednesday. However, the YSRCP has questioned the timing of the announcement by the SEC.

Meanwhile, Nandyal recorded 75 per cent polling by 5 pm. The by election has been peaceful barring few incidents with the election commission taking all necessary precautions to prevent violence in the faction ridden region of Rayalaseema. A large number of women and the old exercised their franchise.

The by poll was necessitated because of the sudden death of sitting MLA Bhuma Nagi Reddy. Nagi Reddy won the seat on YSRC Party ticket but changed his loyalty to TDP on 2016.  Bhuma Brahmananda Reddy, of TDP, and  Silpa Chandra Mohan Reddy of YSRCP are the main contenders. The counting of votes will be held on 28 August.
