Residents spend night struggling to keep rainwater out of their homes

Last Updated 24 August 2017, 21:06 IST

Wednesday night’s rain gave residents of Mahadevapura and other areas a sleepless night with water entering their homes.

Several low-lying areas, including Kalyan Nagar, HRBR Layout, Vidyaranyapura, RT Nagar, Ramamurthy Nagar, Nandidurg Road, Doddanekundi, Banaswadi and Kasturi Nagar were waterlogged after the heavy downpour. Around 20 houses were waterlogged in Mahadevapura alone.

A break in the retaining wall of a storm water drain and garbage stuck in the drains were the main causes of water-logging in these areas. Nanjundegowda, a resident who has been living in the locality for three years, said, “This is the first time rain entered our homes. All our belongings, including the fridge and the TV, have been damaged due to rain.”

His neighbour, Niranjan Rao, said, “I was stuck in traffic due to rain and by the time I reached home, all my gadgets were damaged. I had invested a lot on them,” he said.

In most places, it was people and traffic police who jumped into action to prevent waterlogging by clearing the drains as BBMP officials were not to be seen on Wednesday night.

Brinda S, a resident of Kasturi Nagar said they had to work for more than two hours to prevent water entering their homes. “It rained heavily this time and the water started accumulating on our street. Some of our neighbours joined hands in removing the silt near the stormwater drains to allow the water to flow,” she said.

The drain was choked with silt, pebbles, dry leaves, old shoes and even clothes. “All this had accumulated due to last week’s rain. Some of the roads have also been damaged. The waterlogging was severe this time, but none of the civic officials turned up to help us,” she added.

Ramya N, another resident said her family and friends had a tough time clearing the water. “My father-in-law came home fully drenched and after that, he had to help me clear the rubble to prevent water entering our homes,” she said.

Salman Khan, an auto driver said that the drain was too small to handle the flow when it rains heavily. “OMBR Layout near Banaswadi has a lot of low-lying areas. Also, many houses and apartments have basement parking lots where water accumulates,” said Khan.

When questioned about the absence of civic officials at certain places, BBMP commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad said, “Our workers have been working throughout the night helping people pump out the water from their homes in Mahadevapura. There have been certain places where, by the time we received the complaint and reached the spot, the water may have receded. I need to verify with them.”
