Fire in RTO destroys thousands of files

Around 30 to 35 firefighters and five fire tenders battled for over four hours to douse a fire at RTO in Indiranagar on Friday evening.

The fire destroyed thousands of vehicle documents stored in the record room, some even from the 1970s, officials said. Though it was a government holiday for the RTO, documents were being shifted from the old RTO building in the Indiranagar BDA complex to the newly constructed RTO in Ramamurthy Nagar.

Documents were piled up to the ceiling in a record room in the old Indiranagar RTO, a fire official said.

There were electrical wires hanging from the roof everywhere. The cause of the fire is said to be short circuit, a fire official said.

“We received a call at our control room at 4.15 pm on Friday. The nearest fire station was alerted and five vehicles proceeded to the spot,” said Markandaiah, Deputy Director, Fire Prevention.

“Our personnel battled the fire till 8.30 pm and stayed till 10 pm to make sure the fire doesn't recur,” he added. The RTO officials are yet to ascertain the number of vehicle documents that were destroyed in the fire.
