Overnight downpour leaves city in knee-deep mess

The city was confronted with heavy rainfall late on Friday night, which continued into the wee hours of Tuesday morning. The rains caused much havoc on the streets, including heavy inundation and tree falls. Rain also affected Bakhrid celebration in the city.

Koramangala, H S R Layout, Madiwala, Bommanahalli, BTM Layout, Silk Board junction, Kodichikannahalli, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, Uttarahalli, J P Nagar, Puttenahalli, Sarjapur Road, Ejipura, S T Bed, Jyothinagar, Mysuru road, Bapuji Nagara, Magadi road and Anugraha layouts were the worst affected areas.

Konanakunte located at the tip of Bengaluru South received the highest rainfall in the early hours of Saturday recording 96.5 mm of rainfall in just four hours. The rain which began at 3 am was accompanied by lightning and heavy thundering caused flooding in low lying areas and places where drains were clogged.

According to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), Bengaluru South and South East experienced heavy rainfall which continued throughout the day till afternoon. Areas which received heavy rainfall include HSR Layout, Kumaraswamy Layout, Uttarahalli, Somanahalli, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Bommanahalli, Singasandra etc.    

Till 8.30 pm on Saturday, the city received      mm rainfall. According to the IMD, the showers resumed at 4 pm on Saturday in several parts of the city.

G S Srinivasa Reddy, Director, KSNDMC, said: “KSNDMC have alerted about rain to BBMP on Thursday night and the rainfall is likely to continue for the next two days”. 

City Mayor G Padmavathi visited Begur Lake areas, surrounding low lying layouts, like Viswapriya Layout, Mico Layout etc., after visiting HSR layout which was flooded.

BBMP control room received 60 complaints till Saturday evening and most of the complaints are about tree falls and waterlogging. According to the BBMP control room officials, most of the calls are from Bommanahalli zone, South Bengaluru, and East Bengaluru areas.
