No solution in sight for hapless HSR Layout residents

Many areas in locality flooded with sewage

The negligent attitude of the civic authorities towards HSR Layout has enraged the residents since not even a single civic official has turned up to check the damage and problems caused in the locality due to water logging and stagnant water after heavy rains for the past four days.

The residents of Sector 5, 6 and 7 of HSR Layout have faced the brunt of water logging for the past 20-25 days. What is worse, the existing primary stormwater drain is filled up to the brim, and there is no space for the rain water to flow. This has led to the reverse flow of the sewage water causing water logging in the entire locality. Not only this, sewage water is oozing out of BWSSB manholes and this has lead to the accumulation of dirty water on the roads.

The streets of 13th cross, 14th A, B, 15th and 16th cross are perpetually affected with sewage water entering homes. “This is a low-lying area and all the adjacent roads have been raised making this a catchment area. As there is no space for water accumulated in the drain to flow, this has lead to stagnation of water across the locality helping mosquitoes to breed,” said Pradeep Nagaraj, a resident.

The residents say that the civic body is approaching the problem at a micro level and not macro level, which could solve the problem temporarily. “Bruhat Bengaluru Mahangara Palike (BBMP) has not understood the science behind this problem. They wasted about Rs 11 crore in 2010-12 for SWD work. But they messed up in the guise of re-modelling the system. They should have raised the culvert by another meter for the free flow of water and that would have created some space to more water flow," said a resident.

The water flowing from Tavarekere, Madiwala and Jayanagar flows into this drain. “The BJP members said that they would visit our locality today but none of them have come. We do not understand this indifferent attitude towards our locality,” he said. “We will not pay taxes from next time if this is the attitude of the authorities,” he added.

Gurumurthy Reddy, the area councillor said, "Not many places are water logged. We have pumped out the water and now the water has receded."
