National-level protest in city today

Last Updated 11 September 2017, 20:51 IST

A week after senior journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh was shot dead near her Rajajeshwari Nagar residence, nearly 50,000 people from across the country kill converge on Bengaluru on Tuesday to condemn her murder.

Gauri Lankesh Hathya Virodhi Horata Vedike will take out a procession from city railway station and later hold a pubic meeting at Central College grounds. Progressive thinkers, journalists, activists and actors such as P Sainath, Teesta Setalvad, Sagarika Ghose, Anand Patwardhan, Prashant Bhushan, Medha Patkar, Kavita Krishnan and Prakash Rai are prominent among those who will take part in the  national-level ‘Resistance Convention.’

Writer Prof K Marulasiddappa, one of the founders of the Vedike, says: “We want to resist efforts to silence dissent in the country. We want to show that Gauri’s murder hasn’t shaken us and we are committed against communalism, fundamentalism, fascism and extremism.”

The Vedike is of the view that Gauri’s murder is similar to that of rationalists Govind Pansare, Narendra Dabholkar and M M Kalburgi. They suspect that the same ‘communal forces’ are behind all the four killings.

The police are yet to crack the two-year-old Kalburgi murder case.
