Times of fear

Last Updated 13 September 2017, 04:34 IST
We are all in constant fear- everyone is living or working in fear- a mother is afraid for her children, father for his business or job, employee is afraid of his employer or a fellow competitor - there is hardly a man who is not afraid that some other man will do him a bad turn. Fear is the most devastating of emotions. A scientist said that each century can be summarised by one word 'fear', that also sums up this century.

Once fear has positioned itself firmly in place, it does not want to be sent packing. It is generally much harder to rid yourself of it, than it was to acquire it in the first place. Over time, fear becomes internalised and becomes a part of you. Try as you might to get rid of it, it holds on tight.

But if fear is the dark night, faith is the bright morning! The only surefire way to get rid of fear is to make certain that you replace it with courage. Once you have eliminated it from your mind, you will be ‘free’.  To conquer fear, one must 'acknowledge it’, ‘dissect it’, 'envision it’ and 'confront it’. For this to happen, one must become spiritually mature and strong. There is much in this world to make you afraid but there is much much more in your faith to make you fearless.

Those who fear life are three parts dead- let us all try to live life fully, wrapped around by unflinching faith in ourselves and in our creator.

William Cowper said, "God moves in mysterious ways. He plants his footsteps in the sea and rides upon the storm. O fearful ones, take fresh courage: the clouds you so much dread are big with mercy and shall break into blessings on your head."

Whenever we get caught in anxiety and fear, these words can fill us with confidence and assurance. In due time, one will learn that things will turn out neither as well as one hoped nor as badly as one feared. Roosevelt said, "I fought fear and conquered it by helping people who were worse off than I was." We can emulate his principle.
