BPRD to set up research centre in academic institution

Last Updated 13 September 2017, 20:31 IST
The Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) is planning to set up a research centre in a leading academic institute to promote knowledge creation and policy analyses in criminal justice system.

The BPRD, the government’s thinktank on policing, feels that better research can be conducted and more useful results obtained through such a centre.

Sources said an Expression of Interest has been invited from “capable” institutions of higher learning of national repute based in New Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) for establishing a Center for Research in Criminal Justice System.

The centre will “promote research, knowledge creation, policy analyses and come out with recommendations for systemic and procedural improvements in the criminal justice system”, according to a BPRD document.

The BPRD, which is mandated to identify and study the problems, needs and challenges of the police, prisons and law enforcement, has so far sponsored 336 research studies on subjects such as law enforcement, criminal justice system and correctional administration.

“It is felt that BPRD research projects should be capable of contributing to advancement of theoretical knowledge and they should also have greater scope for policy analyses. These research projects should provide sound recommendations for systemic and procedural improvements in the criminal justice system. To achieve this, greater coordination and collaboration with the academia is desirable,” the document said.
