The minor irrigation department has started pumping water from the Tippagondanahalli reservoir to low-lying areas such as Manchanabele, after a gap of five years. The action comes in the wake of direction by the public accounts committee.

R Ashoka, chairperson of the committee, told DH that the decision to pump water was taken after he and other members of the panel visited the dam recently to assess water levels.

“The reservoir is full, but is polluted. We have directed all the departments concerned to submit a report in a week on the encroachment on catchment area,” Ashoka said on Friday. He was speaking to reporters after taking part in a meeting of the public accounts committee.

The PAC has directed revenue department and local administrations of Magadi and Nelamangala to ensure that sale deeds in respect of properties in the catchment areas are not registered.

Directions have been issued to authorities of Peenya Industrial Area, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Karnataka Industrial Areas Board, Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association and other industry bodies to install sewage treatment plants.

A sub-committee of revenue department and local administration officials was constituted to study the buffer zones around the catchment areas of Arkavathy. The next meeting is scheduled for October 6, Ashoka added.
