Heavy showers continue in N K'taka, coast

Parts of north and south interior Karnataka and coastal districts received intermittent showers on Sunday following the upper air cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.

The incessant rain in the last three to four days has left a trail of destruction in Hyderabad-Karnataka districts.

Following the release of a staggering 1.43 lakh cusecs of water from Ujani dam in Maharashtra to Bhima river, a portion of the bridge-cum-barrage between Kallur (B) in Jewargi taluk and Chinmalli in Afzalpur taluk has been washed away. In Yadgir district, the inflow into Basavasagar reservoir in Narayanpur was 60,000 cusecs and the same quantum of water was released to the Krishna river, triggering a flood alert in the villages.

Aurad taluk in Bidar district received heavy rain on Sunday. The water from Dhanegoan reservoir is likely to be released in a day or two. Flood alert has been issued for the villages on Manjra river.

The body of Shivanand Basanagouda Hosahalli (28), who was swept away in Doni river at Hadginal near Talikote in Vijayapura district on Saturday, was fished out of the stream on Sunday. Shivananda and his friend Prakash Konnuru were washed away in the overflowing Doni river on Saturday evening. While Shivanand drowned, Prakash swam to safety.

Basavanabagewadi taluk in Vijayapura district witnessed downpour on Saturday night. The town received 7.28 cm of rain while Areshankar in the taluk recorded 9.54 cm. Sindagi town received heavy showers.

Over 30 fishing boats from coastal districts in Karnataka and from Goa have been anchored at Baithakhol harbour, Karwar, owing to the rough sea. The local fishermen have been barred from venturing into deep sea due to bad weather. Karwar town and parts of Uttara Kannada district received moderate to heavy showers on Monday. Moderate to heavy rain continued to lash Malnad region on Sunday. Shivamogga, Bhadravathi received heavy rain on Sunday morning. Several places in Dakshina Kannada district received bountiful rain on Saturday night. The water-level in Netravathi and Kumaradhara has increased following showers. Mysuru and Chamarajanagar witnessed good spells of rain on Sunday evening.
