Street vendors question survey methodology

Last Updated 17 September 2017, 20:08 IST

The BBMP started a survey of street vendors in Dasarahalli zone the city on Sunday only to find out that most of such vendors were unaware of the exercise while the intermittent rain forced many to suspend sales and go home.

The Beedi Vyapari Sanghatanegala Okkuta visited the spots and released a report on the survey detailing the shortcomings in the survey methodology.

The surveyors succeeded in mapping the vendors at places like Dasarahalli market by distributing the forms in the morning and collecting them in the evening.

At Hesaraghatta Main Road, where the Dasarahalli BBMP zone office is located, the members of the Okkuta met six vendors but none had an idea about the survey. “No one had visited them since morning till 5 pm when we last checked,” said the report.

The findings of the report question the efforts BBMP put in to spread awareness about the survey among street vendors.

Identity proof, photos

Only a few were aware of the survey and had brought the identity proof and photos.

“Venkatesh, a vendor who sells guava, waited near State Bank on Laggere Main Road for a few hours. Since no one came, he proceeded to move further on Laggere Main Road and did not spot any surveyors anywhere. However flower vendors like Rathnamma and Vasantha were not aware of the survey at all. Others had closed their carts due to the rain,” the report states.
