Role of Dawood Ibrahim to be probed in extortion racket

Last Updated 19 September 2017, 12:28 IST
The role of India’s most wanted man – Dawood Ibrahim – would be probed by agencies in the wake of the arrest of his younger brother Iqbal Kaskar on charges of extortion.

Iqbal and two others – Mumtaz Shaikh and Israr Ali Jamil Sayyed were arrested on Monday night by the Anti-Extortion Cell of Thane police.

On Tuesday, they were produced before a Magistrate’s court, which remanded them to police custody for eight days.

The three accused have been booked on charges of extorting money and property in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai areas from builders, developers, businessmen and jewellers.

Iqbal Parkar, a close relative of Dawood’s sister late Haseena Parkar, and drug dealer Mohammad Yasin Khwaja Hussain were also detained in connection with the case.

Iqbal was arrested from Nagpada by a team led by senior inspector Pradeep Sharma, who has over 100 encounters under his belt.

“People were issued threat in the name of Dawood Ibrahim and sometimes shooters were brought from outside the state to forcibly evacuate properties,” Thane police commissioner Parambir Singh told reporters.

The Thane police are looking at the possibility of invoking the provisions of the stringent Maharashtra Control for Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

Kaskar had illegally taken four houses from the builder and had been demanding more. The builder had earlier approached him for settling a dispute, which the don’s brother did. The building had lodged a complaint with the Kasarwadavali police station which was later transferred to the Crime Branch.

“Names of some builders and politicians, including corporators, have also a come up during the investigation. We would probe it. The role of Dawood Ibrahim would also be examined,” he said.

It may be recalled in 2003, he was deported from the United Arab Emirates – and subsequently booked in two cases – murder of a Customs department informer and the development of Sara-Sahara shopping complex at the Crawford Market that came on a government land. However, he was acquitted in both the cases by courts.

Iqbal was eating biryani, watching KBC
Iqbal Kaskar was completely unsuspecting when cops came knocking at his doors. Iqbal was feasting on a plate of biryani and watching quiz show, Kaun Banega Crorepati, when Thane police, entered the room and took his custody. He was staying in the flat of his late sister Haseena Parkar, as the building in Pakmodia Street where he stays, had to be vacated after an adjoining building caved in around a fortnight ago, claiming over 30 lives.

Arrest comes ahead of film on sister
It may be a strange coincidence – but the arrest of Iqbal Kaskar – comes ahead of the Friday release of ‘Haseena Parkar’, a film based on the life of his late sister. Actress Shraddha Kapoor plays the role of the protagonist while Siddhanth Kapoor portrays the role of Dawood Ibrahim.
