From LoC, Mehbooba seeks end to Indo-Pak hostility

Appealing for peace on borders, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti Tuesday sought an end to hostilities between India and Pakistan saying it is the people of the State who suffer the brunt of these skirmishes.

"People of Jammu & Kashmir are the worst victims of this hostility which has led to the killing of people, dislocations and damages to the property on both the sides. The skirmishes along the border areas in the State have led people to frequent migrations and leading to a life of pitiable conditions," Mehbooba said while addressing a public rally near the Line of Control Tanghdar Karnah area of north Kashmir's Kupwara district.

She said peace in the State and between the two South Asian neighbours holds key to the progress and development in the region.

"It is unfortunate that when people should have been demanding facilities of schools, hospitals, playfields and hospitals, they are forced to seek construction of bunkers to save them from firepower. It is a point to ponder that what have the people achieved from the hostility of 70 years," the Chief Minister said.

Flagging friendship as the only way forward, Mehbooba said with peace and cooperation new vistas of progress and development for the people could be opened.

Worried over widening the gap with her voters after months of political unrest, Mehbooba embarked on an ambitious plan to reconnect with the people in far-off villages in the Valley. On Sunday, she spent a day listening to the elders and youths in the volatile Pulwama district of south Kashmir.

This is the first time since Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani's death last July, that the chief minister interacted with the public.

"The public interactions in villages are aimed at trying to rebuilt the nearly lost legitimacy of the government and winning back the foot-soldiers of party by carrying out developmental work at a fast pace," a senior PDP leader said.
