Heavy rains lash Mumbai, Konkan coast

Last Updated 19 September 2017, 13:33 IST
Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds, lightning and thunder-battered Mumbai and its suburbs on Tuesday.

However, there were no reports of any major disruption of road and rail traffic in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) covering Mumbai and parts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts. There were, however, incidents of traffic snarls in the evening peak hours.

Trains of Central Railway reported delays of five to 10 mins while Western Railway was on time but there was an incident between Vile Parle and Santacruz when some branches of trees snapped with an OHE of a local train.

The coastal Konkan districts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg and Western Maharashtra districts of Kolhapur and Satara too received heavy rains. The water stock at the Koyna and Radhanagri dams had shown increase in the wake of the heavy downpour in the last two days.

According to the IMD’s Mumbai-based Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), monsoon was active over the region and the wet spell would continue on Wednesday.

Most districts of Konkan, many places over Madhya Maharashtra and Vidarbha and few districts of Marathwada would receive rainfall for the next 24 hours, according to the weathermen.

According to Skymet Weather, a cyclonic circulation is persisting over north-coastal Maharashtra and adjoining South Gujarat. Moreover, the offshore trough which is running from Konkan to Kerala along the West Coast has also become active.

In the wake of these two weather systems, heavy rains were observed over most parts of coastal Maharashtra, sparing Mumbai. However, now moderate to heavy rains are expected to lash the maximum city during the next 24 hours.
