In yet another ceasefire violation, an Army solider was killed and three others injured in sniper fire from the Pakistani side along the Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector of north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Wednesday.

An army official said that Pakistan Rangers in violation of ceasefire opened sniper fire at 5/9 GR unit of the army near Pimple Post in Keran sector along the LoC injuring four soldiers.

They were airlifted to Army’s 92-base hospital in Srinagar, where one of them identified as Rajesh Khatri was declared brought dead by the doctors.

He said “necessary and adequate” response has been given to the Pakistani firing. Earlier on July 12, two army men were killed in sniper firing by Pakistani troops in the same area. On August 8, an army soldier was killed due to sniper fire from across the LoC in the border district of Poonch in Jammu region.

Sources said Pakistani troops have positioned snipers at odd locations close to the forward posts to target Indian troopers proceeding on long patrols and forward locations. "Pak Army relies on their team of snipers to target Indian positions and in the last one year, several Indian troopers have lost their lives in sniper shots," they revealed.

The latest ceasefire violation came a day after J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti appealed for peace on borders and sought an end to hostilities between India and Pakistan saying it is the people of the State who suffer the brunt of these skirmishes.

There have been hundreds of violations of the 2003 ceasefire agreement by the Pakistan along the LoC and the International Border in J&K since Indian army carried surgical strikes on terror launch pads in Pakistan occupied Kashmir on September 29 last year.
