Heritage City abuzz with Dasara fervour

 With hundreds of tourists including foreigners visiting Mysuru over the weekend, venues of most Dasara events were chock a block. Tourists’ footfall was high at the Food Mela, Flower Show, Mysuru Palace, Mysuru Zoo and Chamundi Hill.

Bamboo Biryani, a tribal delicacy which is on offer at the Food Mela, received an overwhelming response while the Flower Show at Kuppanna Park turned out to be a big crowd-puller. A replica of Sri Chennakeshava Temple of Somanathpura has been the major attraction at the Dasara Flower Show.

On Saturday, the third day of Navaratri, a majority of the hotel and lodge rooms were booked. A large number of tourists are expected to visit the city on Sunday too. Events such as helicopter ride, Palace on Wheels, water sports at Varuna Lake on T Narasipur Road and Dasara Darshana, a special bus tour, also received good response.

 Heritage walk

Hundreds of youth took part in the ‘Heritage Walk’, organised as part of Mysuru Dasara on Saturday morning. The walk, organised to spread the importance of heritage structures in the city, commenced from the Town Hall. The youths were taken to 10 heritage structures and historians briefed them about the importance of the structures, including, Silver Jubilee Clock tower, Chamarajendra Circle, Mysuru Palace, Krishnarajendra Circle, Devaraja Market, K R Hospital, Mysore Medical College and Research Centre and Ayurveda College.

Additional Deputy Commissioner T Yogesh flagged off the walk while N S Rangaraju and Echanur Kumar gave detailed inputs about the structures. The students of Teresian College and Siddhartha Nagar Government First Grade College participated in the walk.

The Women and Children Dasara Sub-Committee organised ‘Adarsha Atte-Sose’ programme at J K Grounds. Karnataka Women Commission Chairperson Nagalakshmi Bai inaugurated the event. Bai said that mother-in-law and daughter-in-law are like two wheels of a vehicle and they should maintain a healthy relationship for a happy family.

The sub-committee had also organised a variety of sports and games and cultural events for the participants.

Farmers’ Dasara

A variety of sports competitions had been organised for farmers as part of Raitha Dasara at J K Grounds. Manoj Kumar of Danayanapur in T Narasipur taluk secured the first place in the sprint race which required participants to carry a 50 kg bag of fertiliser. He has been winning the first place for the past five years. Farmers also enjoyed other events such as lifting of a boulder, gunny bag race, lemon and spoon race, and pot carrying race.

Couples cook up a storm

Couples actively took part in the cookery competition organised by the Dasara Food-Mela Sub-Committee at the Scouts and Guides Grounds near the Deputy Commissioner’s office here. Couples rustled up ‘ragi ball’ and other delicacies.

Students practice karate

Hundreds of school students practiced as part of the karate show organised at Chamaraja Circle in the city.
