RTO working on e-permit for auto-rickshaws

Last Updated 24 September 2017, 20:49 IST

In the wake of rising cases of auto-rickshaws running with fake permits, the Transport Department is contemplating on introducing ‘e-permit’ which allows quick online verification.

An official from regional transport office said a proposal will soon be submitted to the department in this regard. “The number of auto-rickshaws has increased with the expansion of the city. Many have obtained permit through paper-based system. But there are many driving auto with fake permits. It is difficult to verify the authenticity of permits. So we have decided to bring an online-based system,” he added.

The plan comes following a recent complaint by auto drivers’ unions over dubious permits. A team led by a joint commissioner had found that there were 13,000 auto-rickshaws running with fake permits.

The RTO officials have held two rounds of meetings with auto drivers over the new system. “The officials told us in the meeting that the new system will be transparent and will end corruption. As of now, though the fee for renewing permit is Rs 500, middlemen backed by officials charge Rs 1,500” leader of an auto drivers union said.
