“Flipkart created history in the smartphones segment with sales of 1.3 million smartphones in the first 20 hours, higher than the total number of smartphones sold across India in a single day, both through online and offline,” the company said.

Smartphones, which grew 2.5X, and large appliances, which grew 4X, were the leading categories for Amazon as well. “We are humbled that the latest version of the Great Indian sale was our biggest shopping event ever, with remarkable growth across categories led by smartphones and large gppliances growing multiple times vs last year.” said Manish Tiwary, Vice President - Category Management, Amazon India.

Samsung (5X), Redmi (5X) and OnePlus (3X), were the leading brands. Further, apparel continued its reign as one of the largest selling categories on Amazon, with ethnic brands witnessing 5X growth. Prime, Amazon’s flagbearer, remained the best selling product for the platform.

Amazon was able to mark 85% new customers acquisition in Tier II and III cities. Flipkart’s new customers acquisition was at 30%-35%. Both platforms also witnessed significant surge in customers using affordability solutions, such as no cost EMI, buyback guarantee and product exchange.
