When the baton charge failed to control the stone-pelting mob, police fired in the air.<br /><br />The incident happened after six persons, including two women and a five-year-old child, were killed and several others injured when a mini-truck carrying 30 persons collided with a cement-laden truck at Patuli area, 10 kms from here, at around 5:45 am, IGP (Law and Order) Surojit Kar Purokayastha said.<br /><br />When the injured were rushed to the nearby Peerless Hospital, the locals alleged that the nursing home authorities turned down their plea to offer emergency first-aid to the injured and demanded money to be deposited in advance before initiating treatment. This led to a heated exchange between the hospital staff and the locals, who shortly outnumbered the hospital security staff and barged their way into it.<br /><br />The mob ransacked the emergency unit, pathology laboratory and broke computers and furniture outside the operation theatre and also damaged some vehicles parked near the hospital. They also obstructed fire tenders from approaching the spot. The damage was done before the police arrived, some panicked hospital workers said.West Bengal Sunderbans Affairs Development Minister Kanti Ganguly who rushed to the spot persuaded the mob to retreat.</p>
