Unrelenting rain leaves trail of destruction in North K'taka

Heavy showers on Friday night and Saturday caused extensive damage to crops and property in North Karnataka region and parts of Tumakuru and Mysuru districts.

Over 80 houses in Raichur, Bagalkot and Davangere districts have suffered partial or complete damage in the overnight rain.

In Devasugur hobli near Shaktinagar, Raichur district, alone, 50 houses have collapsed in Friday night showers. With streams and rivulets flowing in full steam, the vehicular movement to over 15 villages has been cut off. The road bridge on Jegarkal-Hosapete route has remained under water.

Paddy, Bajra, tur, groundnut and sugarcane crops on hundreds of acres in Raichur taluk are under water.

Crops destroyed

Onion, sunflower and cotton crops are rotting due to incessant showers.

Deputy Tahsildar S V Kundargi told DH, “A joint survey by Revenue and Agriculture department will be carried out to assess the damage caused to crop and houses in Hungund taluk and compensation will be distributed to the victims based on the report.”

Roads in the rehabilitation centre at Kudalasangama in Hungund taluk have been washed away in Friday night showers.

Koppal town and surrounding villages received moderate to heavy showers on Friday night. Hirehalla stream is flowing in full spate.

Gadag town and parts of district experienced heavy rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, on Saturday evening. The standing Kharif crops in Gadag, Nargund, Ron and Mundargi taluks have submerged in rainwater.

Incessant rain lashed Hubballi-Dharwad and surrounding areas for more than one hour on Saturday evening. Light showers began in the afternoon, and it got intensified by evening.

Parts of Chamarajanagar district and Channarayapatna taluk in Hassan district received rains on Friday night and Saturday.

Shivamogga city and parts of the district, including Bhadravathi, Hosanagar and Sagar taluks, experienced moderate showers.
