The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has an uncanny knack of attracting criticism. On Tuesday, irate fans slammed the Board for sending out a birthday message tweet to Anil Kumble that lacked respect.
“Here’s wishing former #TeamIndia bowler @anilkumble1074 a very happy birthday,” read the BCCI message on its official Twitter.
The post was instantly met with plenty of criticism with furious fans hitting out at the Board for calling the legendary former captain and coach a mere “former bowler”.
Some fans asked the board to show respect to not just the country’s highest wicket-taker but also one of its greatest match-winners.
With egg on its face, the BCCI hurriedly deleted the tweet before sending out another post which read, “Here’s wishing a very happy birthday to former #TeamIndia Captain Mr Anil Kumble #Legend #HappyBirthdayJumbo”.
But the damage was already done. It clearly showed there is still no love lost between Kumble and the body.
Kumble was appointed the coach of the national team in 2016, and while the team enjoyed phenomenal success during his period, the end was extremely bitter. Reports emerged of a rift between him and skipper Virat Kohli before the legend walked away, citing the relationship between the two “untenable”.
