Technical glitch hits Metro train

Panic gripped Metro passengers in the evening on Tuesday as a glitch jammed the doors of a train at MG Road Metro Station. This forced stopping of about 15 trains at various stations for about 10 minutes.

An eyewitness told DH that the Mysuru Road-bound train arrived at the station at 6.08 pm but the doors remained jammed for about five minutes. “Finally, when the doors did open, passengers started rushing in. But the doors suddenly closed even as people were entering the train. There was panic for a moment when some passengers’ legs or arms and luggage got stuck in the closing doors. Some on the threshold jumped in or out at the last moment,” said Deepti Naik, who works in a private company on MG Road.

Deepti said the train arrived at MG Road station at 6.08 pm and left at 6.17. BMRCL spokesperson U A Vasanth Rao said that there was no problem with the door but the train had a brake problem. “This was resolved in 5 minutes and subsequently the commuters got into the train which again took 5 minutes and thus there was a stoppage of the train for 10 minutes and normal service was restored after a while. During this period all trains on Line 1 were at their respective stations and there was no evacuation,” he said.

BMRCL sources said passengers also obstructed a closing door. “The train operator couldn’t understand the status of the door. This led to further malfunctioning. Many passengers won’t listen to Metro security and try to enter the train even though the train is already jam-packed,” the source told DH.
