Govt clears one-time relaxation in rules for NIT faculties' promotion

Last Updated 20 October 2017, 13:46 IST
Assistant professors of the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), who have completed six years of service with current academic grade pay of Rs 8,000 per month, are eligible for promotion to the rank of associate professors.

The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has revised recruitment rules for all NITs to introduce this provision as "one-time relaxation."

The changes have been brought in to the recruitment rules following recommendations of an Anomaly Committee, set up by the ministry in July, to look into the issues arising out of the implementation of the new rules for appointment and promotion of the faculties.

The ministry notified recruitment rules for the NITs in May. The principal rules stipulate for the promotion of assistant professors only after nine years of service. The revised rules retain this provision too.

An existing faculty member with nine years of total working experience, of which three years should be after PhD, with at least three years at the level of assistant professor with academic grade pay (AGP) of Rs 8,000 per month will also be eligible for promotion to the rank of associate professor.

“This (rules for promotion of assistant professors after six years) is just one-time relaxation and will be applicable only in case of faculties who participate in the recruitment process of the same NIT where they have currently been working,” a note on the revised rules clarifies.

In the revised rules, the ministry has also provided for “one-time mapping” of the existing associate professor with an AGP of Rs 9,000 per month to Rs 9,500 per month as well as the existing professor with an AGP of Rs 10,000 per month to Rs 10,500 per month.

“An associate professor with AGP of Rs 9,000 and minimum credit points of 50 will be eligible for movement to associate professor with AGP of Rs 9,500 while a professor with AGP of Rs 10,000 and minimum credit points of 80 will be eligible for movement to professor with AGP of Rs 10,500,” the revised rules stipulate.
