The Krishnarajapuram police arrested seven people on Friday in connection with a complaint filed by a woman pourakarmika against a contractor for sexually assaulting and abusing them.

Three women pourakarmikas were assaulted and 37 were sexually harassed by garbage contractor Nagesh Kumar and his staff.

The arrested have been identified as Akshay, Sadik, Rajesh, Venkatesh, Abdul, Rafiq and Ayappa, all residents of Krishnarajapuram and employees of the contractor. The prime suspect, Nagesh, and accountant Nandish are still at large.

The police said, “The arrested persons are employees of Nagesh and they were handling salaries of pourakarmikas. They assaulted the pourakarmikas on Nagesh's orders."

The pourakarmikas had complained to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahangara Palike (BBMP) that Nagesh had not paid them their salaries. When Nagesh came to know about the complaint on October 12, he threatened the workers and abused them.

"You salary is in my pants, come and take it,” he said and flashed at the women, said Manjula, one of the pourakarmikas who lodged a complaint against Nagesh.

Sarfaraz Khan, Joint Commissioner (Solid Waste Management and Health) BBMP told DH, “We will blacklist them so that they cannot be part of any BBMP tender in future.”
