Last week, BJP's Tamil Nadu state unit had asked the producers of Vijay-starrer Mersal to cut some scenes that criticise central government policies such as GST and New India.
In the movie, more than one dialogue takes on these policies and mocks them. The issue got national attention after BJP leaders from the state and Vijay fans along with film personalities locked horns on the matter.
Deccan Herald posed a question on Twitter about the standoff between Mersal and BJP. "What is your take on the #MersalvsBJP issue? Reply with your views" was the question, which got our readers talking. We are aggregating the replies here.
@awadkum suggested cinema is meant for entertainment and cannot be used for political mudslinging.
Cinema should be used for what it’s meant for: entertainment, entertainment, entertainment. It should not be used for political mud slinging

Another Twitter user said the movie targets doctors more than it does BJP.
Mersal was outrageous. I think more than bjp it targeted hard working docs without any sense at all. But who cares what it says we work on

@LathaRamaswamy in a series of replies justified Mersal's dialogues. "GST is a plan by central govt to use the State govt revenue", she replied. She also pointed out that truth should be heard from anywhere.

Why hasn't the govt released the proper tax percentages managed by State govts before GST?We need to compare GST with the prior State taxes.

Truth should be heard from anywhere, only now media used for right purpose. Demonetization & GST biggest scams ever!

@hareaswar opined that the Digital India policy is a joke.
Avoiding fake information is important, GST and comparison with Singapore. Digital India was a joke. BJP made this mountain out of mole-hill

And @Vinayakmohan shared the opinion that the movie is 'usual dumb masala' and unnecessarily politicised.
It's the usual dumb masala movie, Politicized unnecessarily. Only demons are riled up by DM. GST is just over 3 months old, work in progress
