One killed, three injured as police fire at rioting villagers

Ahmedabad, DHNS: A farmer was killed as police resorted to firing at hundreds of villagers in tribal-dominated Chilakota village of Dahod district in North-Eastern Gujarat on Thursday night.

Trouble began when a massive gathering of villagers demanded action against policemen responsible for the death of a local man -Kanesh Gamara (31)- who they picked up for questioning at 1.00 am.

Police were looking for Gamara's brother who they believe was involved in theft. Gamara died soon after his release with relatives alleging that he bore torture marks.

Villagers reached Jesawada police station with Gamara's body and discussed with the cops about registering a case of custodial death. The police, however, wanted to file a case of accidental death.

Angry villagers pelted stones at the police station and set fire to two police vans stationed there, prompting the cops to use teargas. Unable to bring the situation under control, police fired at the crowd, injuring three and killing a 45-year-old farmer Ramsu Mohaniya.

A large contingent of police personnel have been deployed at the village, while a case of rioting and attempt to murder under IPC Section 307 is learnt to have been filed against 200 "unknown" people.
