'Fight against unscientific projects needed'

"Destruction of environment is having an adverse effect on the living creatures and the situation might soon get worse if it is not controlled", said Udupi Human Rights Foundation chief Ravindranath Shanbag.

Speaking at a workshop on 'environment conservation-challenges, legal battle, our stand' organised by Praja Spandana, Paropakaram, Nagarika Hitarakshana Samithi, Parisara Vedike and other organisations at the auditorium of National Law College in the city on Sunday, he said that problems related to environment have doubled due to the so-called development projects being taken up by the government. Hundreds of trees are chopped to take up projects like the Ettinahole project. By project like the Netravathi project, man is disturbing the path and source of the river. Stern protests are needed against such projects which are bane to the environment.

He said that due to unabated environment destruction, the forest cover is decreasing day-by-day. Due to rainfall deficiency, the rivers in Western Ghats are facing water shortage. Biodiversity is shrinking and environment adversities are going up.

Environmentalist Esuprakash said that many people have made environment destruction as their business. They are playing with the environment for their self benefit. In the name of bagar hukum also, mass destruction of trees is taking place.

He said that Teerthahalli, Hosanagar and Sagar taluks in Shivamogga district receive used to receive heavy rainfall but even these areas are facing drought now.

Dharwad-based Janadesh Samsthe President Basava Prabhu Hosakeri, Swaraj Abhiyaan State President C Yathiraj, National Law College Principal G R Jagadish, Sahyadri Sanchaya Convener Dinesh Holla, Mangaluru-based National Environment Conservation Forum Secretary Shashidhar Shetty, Arsikere-based Negilayogi Trust President H R Swamy, environmentalists Shivananda Kalave, Nagaraj, Shekhar Gouler and others were present.
