Modi on brief visit to Chennai, to meet Karunanidhi

Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here on Monday for a one-day visit to Tamil Nadu capital to attend a couple of functions and to meet DMK president M Karunanidhi.

Modi, who was received at the airport by Governor Banwarilal Purohit and Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, left for INS Adyar by a helicopter from where he proceeded to Madras University to participate in the platinum jubilee celebration of a leading Tamil daily -  Thina Thanthi  - amid tight security.

Later, Modi will attend the wedding of the daughter of senior IAS officer who works in the Prime Minister's Office. Later, Modi will meet Karunanidhi at his Gopalapuram residence. He is expected to return to Delhi in the afternoon.

Earlier, at INS Adyar, Palaniswami apprised the prime minister about the recent rains in the state and the damages caused to standing crops in various districts.

Sources in the chief minister's office said that Palaniswami also submitted a memorandum seeking financial assistance for flood relief measures.
