Cold wave tightens grip across Kashmir

Cold wave tightened its grip across Kashmir with Leh town in Ladakh region recording the season's lowest night temperature at -7.9 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

A local MeT department official said the mercury dipped to -0.5 degrees Celsius in Srinagar on Saturday night. Leh, in the frontier region of Ladakh, continues to be the coldest place in the state with a low of -7.9 degrees Celsius.

The temperature in the frontier town has been receding during the past one week. Kargil, also in frontier region of Ladakh, was the second coldest place in the state with a low of -5.8 degrees Celsius, he said.

The ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir shivered at -4.6 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam, a health resort which serves as a base camp during the annual Amarnath Yatra in south Kashmir, recorded a low of -2.9 degrees Celsius.

Fresh snowfall has closed the Mughal Road that serves as an alternate route between Kashmir Valley and Jammu region.

The MeT department has forecast partially cloudy sky across Kashmir division over the next 24 hours.
